A vacancy for a job as a signalman for the local rail road in Lagos was put up on national dailies. I saw it and put up an application and was called up for the interview in their office in Lagos. I went for the interview and was told to meet the inspector at the signal box. The inspector gave me a pop quiz, asking me, What would I do if I realised that two trains are heading towards each other on the same track? I told him, I will switch one train to another track. He asked me, What if the lever broke? I said, Then I would run down to the tracks and use the manual lever down there. He challenged me, What if the manual lever down there had been struck by lightning? I told him, I would run back up there, where he is, and use the phone to call the next signal box. He asked me, What if the phone was busy? I said, In that case, I would run to the street level and use the public phone near the station. He asked me, What if it had been vandalized? I said, Oh well, in that case I would run home and call my mother. This puzzled him, so he asked, Why would I do that? I replied, Because, she has never seen a train, crash.
